Is Stage R the right fit?

Is online Stage R right for your child?

Wingu Stage R is especially supportive for these families — and not the right fit for every household. Here is who thrives most in our model.

Sensitive or anxious children

Stage R at Wingu gives nervous learners the emotional safety of home combined with professional structure — no crowded classrooms, no overwhelming transitions.

Families who travel or live abroad

Our fully online model means your child’s Stage R education follows you wherever you are, with no gaps in learning and a globally recognised curriculum spine.

Parents who love play-based learning

If you believe children learn best by moving, exploring and playing — but you don’t want to build a curriculum from scratch — Wingu hands you the pedagogy and the plan.

Parents who want to be actively involved

Stage R at Wingu is a parent–educator partnership. You remain the primary educator in your child’s day; we carry the curriculum design, milestones and professional oversight.

Meets and exceeds South African Grade R requirements, and is fully aligned with the UK Early Years curriculum through the Oxford International framework.
How it works

A parent-guided, teacher-supported model

Each week you receive a clear theme with simple, play-based activities. Short live guidance sessions show you how to bring them to life — and then you and your child explore them together at home in your own time.

01

Receive your weekly plan

Each week you get a theme (“My Family”, “Animals”, “Colours and Shapes”) with play-based activities, printable resources, and practical tips — delivered before the week begins.

02

Attend a short live guidance session

The Early Years teacher models 2-3 key activities with you, explains how each one builds early literacy, numeracy and life skills, and shows you how to adapt them for your child’s pace.

03

Learn through play at home

You weave the activities into your week in a way that fits your routine — bath time, snack time, outdoors, at the table. A weekly planner is available if you prefer a clear daily structure.

What makes Stage R at Wingu different

Most online programmes expect very young children to sit still and listen to a teacher on a screen. Wingu’s model acknowledges that Stage R children learn best by moving, playing and exploring. Our live time is used to equip you — the adult — with practical tools and confidence, so that your child spends most of their learning time away from the screen, fully engaged in meaningful play.

The Oxford International Early Years framework

Built on four overarching principles: every child is unique, children learn and develop at different rates, and learning happens through positive and enabling relationships. The seven areas of learning below sit on top of that foundation.

The seven areas of learning

Three prime areas are essential building blocks — the younger the child, the greater the focus on these. Four specific areas build on the prime areas through subject-style content.

Expressive Arts & Design

Inspired by Montessori principles. Each family receives a practical kit with the hands-on materials needed for the activities, so learning is tangible, joyful and off-screen for most of the day.

Extramurals

Four termly clubs designed for Stage R

Online clubs that rotate each term, plus local in-person meet-ups. Learning & connection go hand-in-hand — the Wingu way of building friendships through play, interaction, and shared experiences.

Local meet-ups too. Wingu Academy hosts in-person events through the year where friends can meet face-to-face. The Wingulian educational journey is all about balance — learning, social connection, and joyful play.

Stage R FAQs

Everything parents ask before starting Stage R Online

Honest answers about how Stage R at Wingu actually works.

About the Stage R model

Five-year-olds learn best by moving, touching and talking — not by sitting still in front of a screen. Our live sessions are primarily for parents so that we can show you what to do, why it matters and how to adapt it for your child. Your child is welcome to be nearby, but most of their learning happens off-screen through play with you.

Yes. Wingu Academy is currently the only online school offering a dedicated Grade R Science subject. The approach is curiosity-driven and play-based — seasons, weather, plants, animals, water, magnets, and “how things work” — explored through observation and hands-on activities rather than formal experiments.

Yes. The Stage R curriculum is mapped into Wingu’s primary school pathway and covers the key early literacy, numeracy, life skills and routines expected at this level. Children who move into Wingu Stage 1 or into a brick-and-mortar school afterwards are well prepared, both academically and emotionally. A formal school readiness assessment runs as the year closes.

Practical questions

No. The programme is designed for ordinary parents and guardians. The teacher provides clear instructions, models the activities, and is available to answer questions. You bring your knowledge of your child; we bring the pedagogy and structure.

Most families find that two to four short activity blocks spread across the week, plus the occasional live guidance session, are enough. Many activities are built into what you are already doing — cooking, playing, reading stories or going for a walk.

Live class time runs from 08:00 to 13:00, Monday to Friday. Stage R learners have one short live lesson each day (rest of the time is play-based at home). Class sizes are capped at 10 learners per class.

All guidance sessions are recorded. You can watch them later in the week and still follow the plan. If you have questions, you can send them through the platform or raise them in the next live session.
